7 Magical Farm Experiences Your Kids Will Never Forget — 30 Minutes from San José

There is a moment that happens almost every morning at Heavenly Highlands. A child runs back from the chicken coop, hands cupped carefully around a still-warm egg, shouting for everyone to come see. No screen has ever produced that face. That is exactly why families from around the world choose a farm stay in Costa Rica over another resort — and why so many of them tell us their kids talk about the farm for years afterward.

Just 30 minutes from San José, in the mountains above Santa Ana, our family farmstay was designed around one simple idea: childhood should smell like rain, fresh fruit, and a little bit of donkey. Here are seven experiences waiting for your family.

1. The morning egg hunt

Every day starts with collecting fresh eggs alongside our team. For city kids, discovering where breakfast actually comes from is pure magic — and yes, they get to eat the eggs they found.

2. Milking the goats with Ana and Elsa

Our gentle goats (named by guests who noticed a certain Frozen resemblance) love the morning milking session. Kids learn, help, laugh, and usually end up with a new favorite animal.

3. Meeting Kristoff the donkey and Caramelo the mini horse

Kristoff is the unofficial mayor of the farm. Caramelo, our tiny horse, is roughly the size of a big dog and twice as charming. These hands-on encounters are what a true kids farm experience in Costa Rica looks like — no fences between your family and the animals' daily life.

4. Picking fruit from more than 75 trees

Bananas, citrus, granadillas and seasonal surprises — everything organic, everything within walking distance of the house. Our chef cooks with whatever the land offers, and kids love eating something they picked themselves an hour earlier.

5. The stingless bee trail

Inside our granadilla tunnel live protected Melipona bees — native, stingless, and essential to Costa Rica's ecosystem. It is a gentle, fascinating science lesson disguised as a garden walk.

6. Champion pigeons overhead

Ronny, the heart of our farm and a national champion pigeon racer, trains his messenger pigeons every morning. Watching them circle the mountains at sunrise is something guests never expect — and never forget.

7. Coffee picking season (December magic)

When December arrives, coffee picking becomes part of farm life. Families join the harvest and learn why Costa Rican coffee is famous worldwide — one red berry at a time.
